Course Level Assessment

Course level assessment of student learning is the responsibility of the instructor teaching the course. Most instructors will assess their courses as part of the academic program assessment.

Evidence of students' learning and methods for gathering evidence of achievement will vary with the type of course. Courses that are project-based, information rich, or skills-based are associated with different learning objectives and will produce different kinds of student learning evidence.

Regardless of course content, instructional methods, and delivery mechanism, the following elements are expected for each course:
  • articulation of learning objectives and their relation to program goals;
  • identification of activities and assignments that address stated learning objectives;
  • formal or informal processes by which modifications to a course will be made to improve learning.

Instructors may also choose to use student feedback on course effectiveness in meeting stated learning objectives to identify areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.
